From September 9th, 2004 to July 12th, 2005, 800 consecutive outpatient colonoscopies were performed by one gastroenterologist .

There were 384 females (48%) and 416 males (52%).
Age
Average age was 56.65 years (17-94). Females 55.61 years (22-94) and males 57.61 (17-84). No statistical difference.

Findings

8 adenocarcinomas were found, equally divided by gender with an overall rate of 1% of procedures.

Incomplete evaluation
8 patients (1%) had incomplete colonoscopies: 4 patients (0.5%) had poor preparation (2 female, 2 male), 1 male (0.125%) had diverticulitis and the procedure was discontinued, 2 females (0.25%) had long tortuous colons and the cecum was not satisfactorily seen. A single scope failure occurred in a male patient (0.125%).
Excluding poor preparation and the single cases of diverticulitis and scope failure, completion rate was 99.75%. |
